Everywhere you look on the internet right now, there are people talking about whether Armie Hammer is going to be the next Batman, or reasons why that is not the case. However, it appears that the upcoming Batman film, direct by Matt Reeves, has not met with any actors to replace Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader. Justin Kroll from ‘Variety’ and Boris Kit from ‘THR’ have both tweeted out that Armie Hammer is not in final negotiations to be Batman, but that that does not mean that Matt Reeves and WB don’t have ideas of who they would like as the next Bruce Wayne. So while it is unfortunate that we cannot start looking at fan art of Hammer’s chin in the cowl and fantasizing about what is coming, we can still fantasize about who we would like to replace Affleck as the Dark Knight. Here are some of our favorites.
With how much the internet exploded over the thought of Hammer donning the cowl, it still would be great to see him actually become Batman. There is no doubt that Hammer has a chin that would look magnificent under the cowl, especially since we got a glimpse of what he could look like when he played the Lone Ranger in the 2013 The Lone Ranger, and maybe that is half the battle. Hammer also showed that he has the chops to cut it as an action star in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Hammer also has some clout after receiving his first Golden Globes nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Call Me By Your Name.Since it appears that Reeves wants to go with a younger Batman for his film, Hammer fits the bill.
While it is true that Hamm is older at 47, he still has the strong jaw that we crave out of our Batmen. His performances in Mad Men and The Town are reasons as to why he would be a great Bruce Wayne and Batman. Hamm has the ability to pull off the playboy Bruce Wayne, and the far more menacing Batman. In this new Batman film we would like to see more of Bruce Wayne, as it is always interesting to see the two sides of the Caped Crusader. Because Reeves is looking for a younger Bruce Wayne though, it may be a problem that Hamm would be nearing the half century mark by the time the film hit the silver screen.
Josh Brolin has been tearing it up in the world of comic book movies, having just come off of a riveting performance as Cable in Deadpool 2 and the all-powerful Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Particularly his role as Cable shows that Brolin has the ability to portray the hero that is struggling with loss, which is quintessential for Batman. While it is likely that we will see him reprise his role as Cable again, it is possible that he could work for both studios. The knock on Brolin is that he is the oldest actor on this list at 51. Brolin could pull off a truly menacing Batman, and is quite the charmer when it comes to the duty to portray Bruce Wayne.
Dacre Montgomery, the fresh-faced 24 year old, should be considered for the role. Montgomery pulled off hot and suave in his role as Billy Hargrove in Stranger Things, and would make for a great playboy Bruce Wayne. It would also be great if Reeves is looking to start with a young Bruce Wayne, who perhaps the studio could work with for several movies as they try to re-brand their Dark Knight. Montgomery also has some action movie (cough) experience in his role as the Red Ranger in Power Rangers. While that movie may have missed the mark for a lot of people, Montgomery at least has the experience and appears to be able to give off the leader persona if we get to see this Batman lead another team in a future Justice League movie.
Ben Barnes who played Billy Russo in The Punisher and Logan in Westworld should be a strong contender for the next Batman. His role in The Punisher‘s first season showed that Barnes can clean-up well and play a sharp-dressed and charming Bruce Wayne, and both seasons showed that he is convincing as a menacing character that would fit a conflicted Batman as well. At 37, Barnes would be able to pump out several movies as the Caped Crusader.
Michael B. Jordan
I know what you are going to say, so don’t even start…but honestly, yes, Michael B. Jordan is 32 and we keep saying that Reeves wants a young Batman. My argument is that Jordan is on an absolute tear right now. He would make for a great Bruce Wayne/Batman combo. He is incredibly charming, good looking, and funny, so playing Bruce would be no trouble to Jordan. And as we just saw by his performance as Killmonger in Black Panther, he can most definitely pull off a strong, powerful Batman. It is 2019 and it is time for the world to be introduced to the newest Batman, Michael B. Jordan
